An electrical panel that was correctly sized decades ago often isn't sized for a modern household. Central air, an EV charger, a finished basement, a larger kitchen and a house full of electronics all add load that older 60-amp or 100-amp services were never designed to carry. When a panel is undersized, the symptoms show up as breakers that trip under normal use, warm panel covers, or a flat refusal from an inspector or insurer to sign off on further work until the panel is addressed.

A panel upgrade replaces the main breaker panel — and, where needed, the service entrance and meter equipment — with a unit rated for higher amperage, typically 150A, 200A, or 400A for larger homes. Beyond raw capacity, a new panel also brings the home's main disconnect, grounding and bonding, and breaker types (including AFCI and GFCI protection where code requires it) up to current standards, which is often the bigger safety improvement even when the old panel's amperage was technically adequate.

How do I know if I need a 150A, 200A, or 400A panel?+

It depends on your home's size and what you're running now or planning to add. A smaller home with gas heat and no EV charger may be comfortable at 150A; a larger home with electric heat, an EV charger, and a workshop often needs 200A or more. We size this from an actual load calculation, not a guess.

Will I lose power during the panel upgrade?+

Yes, for part of the day. The utility disconnects power at the meter while the panel is swapped, and we restore it once the new panel passes inspection. We schedule the outage window and let you know what to expect beforehand.

Does a panel upgrade require a permit?+
