A breaker that trips repeatedly is almost always caused by one of four things: an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, a ground fault, or a failing breaker or appliance. Unplug everything on the affected circuit, reset the breaker once, and if it trips again immediately, stop resetting it and call an electrician instead.
What a breaker trip actually means
A circuit breaker is a safety device, not a switch that fails randomly. It's designed to interrupt the circuit the moment current flow exceeds what the wiring can safely handle, before that excess current turns into heat inside a wall. When a breaker trips, it has detected a real electrical condition — the question is which one, and whether it's a minor, one-time event or a sign of something that needs attention.
The four most common causes
Almost every repeated tripping problem traces back to one of these:
- Overloaded circuit — too many devices drawing power on one circuit at the same time, especially high-draw items like space heaters, hair dryers, or window AC units.
- Short circuit — a hot wire touching a neutral or another hot wire, often from damaged insulation or a wiring fault, causing a sudden large current spike.
- Ground fault — current escaping to a ground path it shouldn't (through a damaged appliance cord, for example), which a standard breaker may or may not catch depending on the circuit type.
- A failing breaker or appliance — the breaker itself has worn out and trips below its rated load, or a specific appliance has an internal fault that only shows up on that circuit.
A safe first check you can do yourself
Unplug everything connected to the affected circuit, then reset the breaker once. If it holds, plug devices back in one at a time, waiting between each, to see if a specific device or a combination of devices is overloading the circuit. If the breaker holds with everything unplugged but trips again as soon as one particular device is plugged back in, that device (or its cord) is the likely culprit.
When it's not safe to keep resetting it
Stop and call an electrician rather than continuing to reset the breaker if: it trips again immediately with nothing plugged in, you notice a burning smell or discoloration at the panel or outlet, the breaker feels warm or loose, or this is a breaker that has never given you trouble before and suddenly starts tripping with no change in how you're using the circuit. Repeatedly resetting a breaker that's protecting you from a real fault doesn't fix the fault — it just delays finding it.
Older panels are a special case
If your panel is a Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel — both common from the 1950s through the 1970s — the concern actually runs the other way: these brands have documented histories of breakers that fail to trip when they should, which is a more serious safety issue than a nuisance trip. If your panel carries either label, it's worth having evaluated even if it isn't currently causing problems.
