Whole-home surge protection is different from the surge-protector power strips most people already use. A device installed at the electrical panel intercepts surges before they reach any circuit in the house, covering hardwired appliances, HVAC control boards, and built-in electronics that a power strip never touches in the first place. It's a complement to point-of-use surge strips for sensitive electronics, not a replacement for them.

The bigger, dramatic surges people think of — a lightning strike — are actually less common than smaller surges caused by utility grid switching, nearby large equipment cycling on and off, or even large appliances in your own home starting up. Those smaller surges happen far more often and cause cumulative damage to electronics and appliance control boards over time, which is the more common, less visible reason whole-home protection pays for itself.

For a surge protection device to actually work as intended, the home's grounding needs to be in good condition — the device relies on a solid ground path to divert the surge safely.
