Knob-and-tube wiring (common before the 1950s) and aluminum branch wiring (common in the late 1960s and early 1970s) are both associated with real safety and insurance concerns in older homes. Neither automatically means immediate danger, but both warrant a professional evaluation, especially before a renovation, home purchase, or insurance renewal.
What knob-and-tube wiring looks like
Knob-and-tube wiring is identifiable by the ceramic knobs and tubes that support and insulate individual wires, usually visible in unfinished attics or basements. It was standard practice before the 1950s and was reasonably safe by the standards of its time.
Why it's a concern today
The issue isn't that knob-and-tube wiring was poorly made — it's that it wasn't designed for how much electricity a modern home actually uses, and it typically has no ground wire, which matters for both safety and for using modern grounded devices. Decades-old rubber or cloth insulation also becomes brittle and can crack, especially if it's been covered by modern insulation (which knob-and-tube wiring needs open air around to dissipate heat safely, and often wasn't installed with).
What aluminum branch wiring is
Aluminum wiring for branch circuits (as opposed to larger service entrance cables, where aluminum is still commonly and safely used today) was common in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely due to a copper price spike at the time.
Why aluminum wiring needs special attention
Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature changes more than copper does, which can gradually loosen connections at outlets, switches, and breakers over years of normal use. A loosening connection increases resistance, which generates heat — a well-documented factor in a higher rate of electrical fires traced to improperly terminated aluminum wiring from this era.
Does it need to be fully replaced?
Not always, and the right answer differs between the two. Aluminum branch wiring can often be safely remediated without full replacement, using connection methods specifically designed for aluminum-to-copper connections (such as COPALUM crimps or AlumiConn connectors) at every outlet, switch, and breaker termination, rather than replacing the wiring itself. Knob-and-tube wiring more often does need to be replaced outright in affected circuits, both because of the insulation condition and the lack of grounding, which remediation methods can't add after the fact.
What to do if you suspect you have either
Don't panic, and don't attempt to identify or work on it yourself — both wiring types require a trained eye to assess safely. Have a licensed electrician inspect accessible wiring in your attic, basement, and panel, especially before a renovation that will open up walls, before a home purchase, or if an insurer has asked about your home's wiring type.
