Lighting Installation

Recessed lighting, fixture upgrades, exterior and landscape lighting — planned and wired correctly the first time.

Lighting work covers a wide range, from swapping an outdated fixture for something modern, to laying out an entirely new recessed lighting plan for a renovated room, to running dedicated exterior circuits for landscape and security lighting. Each of these has its own technical considerations that go beyond simply connecting wires: recessed fixtures need to be rated for contact with insulation if they're going into an insulated ceiling, exterior fixtures need weatherproof, GFCI-protected circuits, and LED retrofits sometimes expose an incompatible older dimmer that causes flickering or buzzing regardless of the new bulb's quality.

Recessed lighting layout matters more than most homeowners expect. Spacing that looks even on paper can leave shadowed corners or hot spots in practice, and retrofitting recessed cans into an existing ceiling without opening it up entirely requires fixtures designed for that kind of installation. We plan the layout around how the room is actually used before cutting anything.

For exterior and landscape lighting, the wiring itself needs to hold up outdoors long-term — buried cable rated for direct burial, weatherproof fixture boxes, and GFCI protection are non-negotiable, not upgrades. We also wire in dedicated circuits for security lighting and dusk-to-dawn or smart controls where that fits the project.

Frequently asked

Lighting Installation questions, answered.

Why do my new LED lights flicker with my old dimmer?+

Many dimmers made for incandescent bulbs aren't compatible with LED's different electrical draw, which causes flickering, buzzing, or a limited dimming range. Swapping to an LED-rated dimmer usually resolves it.

Can recessed lights be added without opening up the whole ceiling?+

In many cases, yes — retrofit recessed fixtures are designed to install through a single ceiling opening rather than requiring the ceiling to be fully opened, provided there's adequate clearance above for the fixture.

Do outdoor lights need a special type of outlet or wiring?+

Yes. Exterior circuits need GFCI protection, weatherproof (in-use rated) covers, and cable or conduit rated for outdoor or direct-burial use, not standard interior wiring.
