Ceiling Fan Installation
A ceiling fan needs a fan-rated box, not just a light fixture box that happens to be in the right spot.
The single most important detail in a ceiling fan installation isn't the fan itself — it's the electrical box it hangs from. Standard ceiling boxes used for light fixtures aren't rated to support a fan's weight and the constant motion and vibration it produces; using one anyway risks the fan eventually working loose from the ceiling. A proper installation uses a fan-rated box, secured either to a joist or with fan-rated bracing between joists, before the fan ever goes up.
Beyond the mounting, wiring a fan with an integrated light usually means running separate switch legs so the fan and light can be controlled independently, whether through two wall switches, a fan/light remote, or a smart control. Vaulted or unusually high ceilings add another consideration: the right downrod length so the fan hangs at an effective height rather than too close to a sloped ceiling.
Outdoor and covered-patio fans need to be rated for damp or wet locations depending on their exposure, along with the same GFCI-protected, weatherproof wiring any exterior electrical work requires.

Can any ceiling electrical box support a ceiling fan?+

What is the red wire for when wiring a ceiling fan?+
It's usually the switched-hot wire that powers the light kit separately from the fan itself, allowing the fan and light to be controlled independently. The exact wiring can vary by fixture and switch setup, which is part of why we'd rather confirm it in person than have a homeowner guess at a live circuit.
